Best Strollers for 5-Year-Olds 2021

You may think it’s crazy, but strollers are sometimes still a necessity as your child gets older. However, not all strollers are made to support the size and weight of a big kid. As such, I have compiled a list of the 5 best strollers 5-year-olds can use with comfort.

My overall best stroller pick has to be the Pockit Lightweight stroller out of the list – it’s truly easy to handle the stroller since it’s lightweight, yet solid enough to hold a 5-year-old’s weight. Here’s a quick outline of my top options:

Let’s take a look at these strollers in detail.

The Importance of a Stroller Specifically for a 5-Year-Old

Why would I Need a Stroller for My 5 Year Old?

It’s easy to pass judgment on the parent of a bigger child who is riding in a stroller. Often the first thing that comes to mind is that the child is spoiled. However, just because a 5-year-old is riding in a stroller it doesn’t mean that there isn’t a good reason.

First, 5-year-olds can still get tired during a long walk or hike. Sure they have more endurance than they did when they were 2 years old, but they still have little legs and bodies compared to yours.

You will especially find strollers used for this age range at amusement parks like Disney. Strollers can also come in handy for a trip to the zoo or if you live in a city where you walk more than drive.

Another reason you may see a big kid in a stroller is due to some sort of medical condition or disability. This could be something physical or it could be something not as obvious. You may need a stroller to keep your little one safe and prevent them from running off and getting lost.

How Big is the Average 5 Year Old?

Before you can even begin to look at strollers for your big kid, you will need to know how big you need to look at. This means being aware of how big the average 5-year-old is, especially if you’re buying a stroller before your little one is even that age (one that can be used from infancy).

According to Baby Center, the average 5-year-old:

  • Boy is 37.5-44.7 pounds; 41.7-44.2 inches
  • Girl is 36.3-44 pounds; 41.3-43.8 inches

How to Choose the Right Stroller

Height

As I just mentioned, being aware of your child’s size (or estimated size by the time they turn 5) is of the utmost importance when selecting a stroller. If you plan to use your stroller’s canopy, you need to make sure the stroller is tall enough for your child to sit underneath without hunching.

Weight Capacity

Equally as important is the stroller’s weight capacity. Your child may “fit,” but if the stroller doesn’t have the correct support, it could buckle under your child’s weight, either causing it to fall apart or just making it difficult to maneuver.

Small Frame

Your 5-year-old is already going to seem like a giant in their stroller; you don’t want to be pushing around something massive due to an overly bulky frame. You also want to make it easy on yourself when you are taking your stroller on travel.

Harness

Even though your 5-year-old is a “big kid” now that doesn’t mean they don’t need to be buckled in. A 5-point harness is still a necessity for safety, especially if they fall asleep. You don’t want any jostling to cause them to fall out of the stroller and injure themselves.

Even 5-year-olds need a 5-point harness. Best Strollers for 5-year-olds | Baby Journey

Lightweight

Your big kid is heavy. In the same way, you don’t want to add extra size with a bulky framed stroller, you don’t want to add too much extra weight to push around with a heavy stroller.

Maneuverability

Extra weight means your stroller will be harder to steer unless you find one with good maneuverability. While there are some good 4-wheeled strollers (there are a couple on my list), 3 wheels are best for maneuverability, especially when you are pushing around a big kid.

Cost

If you are only purchasing a stroller for occasional use specifically for your 5-year-old (not for when they are younger), you probably don’t want to be shelling out a lot of money. Find something that fits your budget and is cost-efficient for the number of times you will be using it.

1. BOB Revolution PRO – Best Jogging

BOB Revolution PRO Jogging Stroller - Up to 75 Pounds - UPF 50+ Canopy - Easy Fold - Adjustable Handlebar with Hand Brake , Black

Jogging with your 5-year-old may not be the first thing on your mind, but there may come a time that a stroller is necessary for just that. Often called the Cadillac of strollers, the BOB Revolution Pro is the perfect stroller for the job.

Like all good tripple jogging strollers, the BOB Revolution Pro has 3 wheels fitted with air-filled bike tires and mountain bike suspension for the ultimate smooth ride. The front-wheel does have a free swivel, but it can be locked to make jogging easier and safer.

The seat is comfortable even for big kids with a seat that reclines to a nearly flat position, ventilation and padding in the seat, and plenty of legroom to stretch out. There is also an extra-large UPF 50+ canopy with plenty of room for your child to sit underneath (supports up to 44”).

The two-step fold is pretty easy even though it’s not one quick move. There are also additional features with the handlebar that are handy for the user. It is padded and adjustable for maximum comfort and there is a handbrake (ideal for jogging safety).

However, nothing is perfect. Even though this stroller is great for jogging with your 5-year-old, it is very bulky and heavy as well as expensive. I would recommend purchasing this if your child is still young so you get plenty of use out of it for the money you will be paying.

Pros:

  • Plenty of leg and headroom for big kids
  • Excellent tires and suspension for comfort and maneuverability
  • Ventilated seat and extra-large canopy to stay cool during the warmer months

Cons:

  • Heavy (30.5 pounds) and bulky
  • Very expensive
BOB Revolution PRO Jogging Stroller - Up to 75 Pounds - UPF 50+ Canopy - Easy Fold - Adjustable Handlebar with Hand Brake , Black
  • Locking swivel front wheel for stability when jogging and easy mobility while on the go in the city. The frame material is high strength aluminum alloy
  • Air filled tires and mountain bike style suspension system offers an ultra-smooth ride, while the adjustable handlebar with hand brake provides downhill control
  • No re-thread harness, one hand near flat recline, and 2 step fold allows for easy adjustments; ventilated, padded seat and extra-large UPF 50+ canopy ensures a cool, comfortable journey

2. Pockit Lightweight – Best Lightweight

gb Pockit Ultra Compact Lightweight Travel Stroller in Capri Blue, The World's Smallest Folding Stroller

If you are looking for a lightweight and compact stroller for your 5-year-old, look no further than the GB Pockit Lightweight, the world’s smallest folding stroller.

The Pockit Lightweight is ideal for people who live in a city where a lot of walking and public transit is required. It is only 9.5 pounds, 16.5 inches wide, and folds small enough to fit in the overhead area of a train or bus.

Don’t let its small frame fool you. It is strong enough to hold up to a 55-pound child as well as 11 additional pounds in the basket under the stroller. There is also a sliding panel on the back that adjusts the torso height to fit older children.

Its lightweight aluminum frame is easy to steer and push with one hand, but it does have a bit of trouble over rough or uneven terrain (i.e. cracks in the sidewalk). Furthermore, while the seat and harness do have plenty of padding, there is no option to recline the seat for additional comfort.

Pros:

  • World’s smallest folding stroller
  • Only 9.5 pounds and 16.5 inches wide
  • Lots of padding on the seat and harness (including the crotch area)

Cons:

  • Difficult to push over uneven terrain
  • The seat does not recline
  • Very small canopy
gb Pockit Ultra Compact Lightweight Travel Stroller in Capri Blue, The World's Smallest Folding Stroller
  • WORLD'S SMALLEST FOLDING STROLLER - With its innovative two-step folding design, the Pockit is the 2014 Guiness World Records most compact stroller folding down to 11.8 inches x 7 inches x 13.8 inches and a weight of 9.5 pounds
  • SMALL BUT STRONG - Built using high quality, durable materials, the Pockit can hold a child from 6 months up to 55 pounds as well as 11 pounds of gear in its convenient storage basket
  • PERFECT FOR DAY TRIPS OR EXTENDED TRAVEL - For families with a passion for local or overseas travel and exploring, Pockit is the quintessential choice as it stows away easily in any plane or train overhead bin, or just stowing away in the car

3. Britax 2017 B-Agile 3 Travel System – Best from Birth

Britax 2017 B-Agile 3 Stroller & B-Safe 35 Infant Car Seat - Raven

In order to get the most for your money, you are best off buying a travel system that you can use from birth, complete with infant car seat and a stroller that will take your child right through their “big kid” phase.

The Britax 2017 B-Agile travel system is a great choice for safety and comfort. While the B-Safe car seat is ideal for carrying your little one up to 35 pounds, the stroller will last much longer since it can carry up to 55 pounds.

At only 18 pounds, the stroller itself is relatively lightweight compared to other similar three-wheeled strollers thanks to its aluminum frame. It is easy to fold with one hand and it comes equipped with plenty of storage and a large canopy.

The 10-inch leg drop is ideal for long 5-year-old legs. However, there is no place to actually rest their feet. Instead, they are just left dangling, which may not be comfortable after sitting for a while.

I would have to say that the best part about this set is the low price point. The car seat and stroller together are actually cheaper than some standalone strollers, like the BOB.

Pros:

  • Comes with car seat and stroller
  • 10-inch leg drop for longer legs
  • Easy to fold with one hand

Cons:

  • No place for your child to rest their feet

Britax 2017 B-Agile 3 Stroller & B-Safe 35 Infant Car Seat - Raven
  • Your purchase includes: One B-Agile lightweight, aluminum frame stroller, one B-Safe 35 Infant car seat and car seat adapters
  • Stroller appropriate from birth, however, Britax recommends use only with an infant car seat until child has head and neck control. Do not use stroller with a child taller than 44 inches or weighs more than 55 lbs. Exceeding this limit may cause stroller to become unstable. Do not overload basket – Maximum weight in basket is 10 lbs
  • Use infant car seat only with children who weigh between 4 and 35 pounds and whose height is 32 inches or less.

4. Baby Jogger 2016 City Mini GT Double – Best for Twins

What about twins? Is it easier to purchase two strollers, or should you consider a tandem one? That is completely up to you, of course, but if a tandem stroller is what you’re interested in, take a look at the Baby Jogger 2016 City Mini Double.

This stroller is equipped with 4 all-terrain tires and front-wheel suspension. These ensure a smooth ride no matter what type of terrain you’re rolling on.

Each seat can hold up to 50 pounds and has independent seat recline and canopy coverage to keep both of your children comfortable according to their own personal preference.

Now, with this being a tandem stroller that does mean it is going to be very large and very heavy (32.6 pounds). However, at 29.5 inches wide, it will still fit through a standard doorway (just barely).

The other downside to this stroller is the low headspace. Bigger kids may have to hunch over a little bit if they aren’t reclined under the canopy. If you decide to keep the canopy retracted, there is no issue.

Pros:

  • Each seat holds up to 50 pounds
  • Individual seat recline and canopy coverage
  • Narrow enough to fit through standard doorways

Cons:

  • Heavy and bulky
  • Low headspace for big kids

5. Baby Trend Sit N Stand Ultra – Best Sit-and-Stand

Baby Trend Sit N Stand Ultra Tandem Stroller, Phantom

Another great option if you have two kids is a sit-and-stand stroller. These are ideal for children of different ages, although they can also be useful for twins. With a standard stroller seat in the front and the option to stand on the platform or sit in an open-air seat at the back, your child has plenty of choices for their ride.

The Baby Trend Sit N Stand Ultra is one of the best strollers in this category. Each seat supports up to 50 pounds, with the front seat’s height limit at 40” and the rear seat having no limit (since it’s open-air).

There is plenty of storage with a large basket and cup holders available for both seats as well as the parent. The stroller itself is a little heavy at 25 pounds, but it folds easily and compact.

While the back seat is great for a bigger kid, it does pose a couple of minor annoyances. First, there is only a 3-point harness (lap belt) since there is no back to the seat. Additionally, it is difficult to reach the storage basket when you have your child strapped into the back seat.

However, this stroller is a steal. You have so much versatility in this one little stroller for a low price point.

Pros:

  • Highly versatile with standard front seat, small back seat, and standing platform
  • Each seat supports up to 50 pounds and there is no height limit for the back seat
  • Inexpensive

Cons:

  • Difficult to access storage basket with a child in the back
  • 3-point harness instead of a 5-point harness on the back seat

Conclusion

There you have it, the best strollers for 5-year-olds. No matter your reason for putting your big kid in a stroller, I am confident that you will be able to find one on my list that will fit your needs and your lifestyle.

Though all of the strollers listed are excellent for a specific use, I would recommend the Pockit Lightweight as the best overall stroller for your big kid.

It is the lightest and most compact stroller, making it perfect for occasional or everyday use. You can fold it down to its smallest size and just carry it in your backpack. There is plenty of storage space in the basket and the seat is super comfortable thanks to all the padding (including the harness).
