The Newton brand is dedicated to ensuring that your baby sleeps in true comfort and absolute safety. It manufactures baby crib mattresses, covers, pads, sheets, and swaddles all known for their outstanding breathability.
The Newton Baby Crib Mattress and Toddler Bed is a 2-stage crib mattress. One side is designed to meet the sleeping needs of infants while the other is tailor-made to handle the weight and sleeping comfort of toddlers. It is available in 3 variations:
- Essential- 4″ with single-layer mattress cover
- Original- 5″ with a double-layer mattress cover
- Waterproof- 5″ with a double-layer mattress cover that is impermeable to water
Notably, the Essential version is available as a Newton mini crib mattress as well as a standard size alternative. However, what undeniably stands out is their design that is not only fully breathable but also fully cleanable. Yes, even the mattress core can be cleaned.
In this Newton Crib mattress review, we peel back the breathable cover of this one-of-a-kind mattress and explore its features and what they can do for you.
Before we dive in, here is a quick summary of its great and not-so-great features.
- Easy to clean and maintain for long-term use
- The breathable design greatly reduces the risk of children suffocating as they sleep
- The waterproof cover alternative can help improve durability as no liquid spills would seep into the mattress
- The 2-stage design enables you to use the mattress from birth to the toddler phase
- It is expensive
- The mattress core can be easily damaged by exposure to direct sunlight or heat
Factors to Consider Before Buying a Crib Mattress
Crib mattresses are not just overpriced miniature mattresses. The reason they mostly cost a pretty penny is because they are uniquely designed to deliver optimal baby safety and comfort. Nevertheless, when it comes to baby stuff, there is hardly ever a one-size-fits-all solution. It is important that you weigh your options and choose a crib mattress that you feel will work best for you and your baby.
Here are a few key factors to consider as you compare the suitability of the Newton baby mattress among other options in the market.
Baby crib mattresses vary in price depending on the brand and what they have to offer. It is advisable to make a list of the mattress features that you would prefer and try to find an option that will match your budget. That said, while some features are negotiable, safety should be a priority.
No matter how amazing a baby mattress is, it will be of no use to you if it does not fit right. Moreover, an ill-fitting mattress is not just unsightly but it can also be a baby hazard. So, before you reach for your wallet, be sure that the crib mattress dimensions match your crib size. For accuracy, use the dimensions stated by the manufacturers of the crib and the mattress.
Infants are born with low immunity and are highly sensitive to most products. Aim for a crib mattress free of toxic chemicals and off-gassing to avoid allergic reactions and similar illnesses.
Any brand can claim that its baby mattresses are free of toxic chemicals or that they are safer than the rest. However, the only way to verify this is through the certifications awarded to the product. Look out for such certifications as you shop.
Your Baby’s Comfort
Comfort determines how well your little one will sleep. A good baby mattress is firm but bouncy. The cover fabric should also be smooth and breathable.
Newton Crib Mattress REVIEW – A Look Into the Features!
The Newton baby crib mattress is a beauty to behold and promises lots of great benefits. The question is, are its features really as good as they are said to be? I put on my mummy Sherlock hat and examined the features, here is what I found.
The Mattress Material
The Newton mattress is made of patented Wovenaire® polymer. This material is made up of individually spun plastic threads. That caught my eye and I was a bit concerned about it. However, I was pleased to learn that it is food-grade plastic which is much safer.
The polymer threads are woven in a special design such that they warp over each other but leave spaces between each other for free airflow. So much so that the Newton brand stands by this mattress being 10% Wovenaire® and 90% air. You will notice this based on how light the mattress feels. All Newton Wovenaire® mattresses are also completely free of foam and latex.
Almost every parent can attest to persistently checking to confirm that their newborn is still breathing. This is mostly because infants can sleep for long durations and are super quiet. Additionally, this parental fear is also stoked by the risk of SIDS and SUIDS.
According to the CDC, over 3,000 babies succumb to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome(SIDS) and Sudden Unexpected Death Syndrome(SUIDS) every year. Both SIDS and SUIDS are mainly attributed to babies suffocating in or around their sleep areas. This is why a breathable mattress is so important. It ensures that no matter what position your baby sleeps in, the mattress will not obstruct their breathing.
The Newton breathable mattress addresses breathability in 2 ways. The mattress cover is made of 100% breathable polyester and you will notice that it has microscopic holes that aid the flow of air. Beneath the cover lies the Wovenaire® mattress whose material is specially woven to leave room for air circulation. All this to say that even if your baby rolls onto their belly, they would still be able to breathe just fine.
Breathability further contributes to comfort. During warm seasons, it is likely that your baby may get a bit warm during naps. The free circulation of air through this mattress could minimize or entirely prevent the discomfort caused by sweating. The airflow would help wick off moisture.
The Quilted Mattress Cover
In the interest of full disclosure, I was drawn to the Newton baby mattress quilted cover way before I knew what the mattress was made of. It is smooth, has a cute design in multiple color options, and simply screams of comfort.
My vanity aside, the mattress cover is made of breathable polyester and has a zip that makes it easy to remove and replace after cleaning. Speaking of which, it is machine-washable and fits right back without you having to wrestle the mattress into it. The waterproof and non-waterproof cover alternatives are a plus in my book as well because we all have unique parenting preferences.
From accidental burps, milk spills, to bedwetting, crib mattresses contend with a lot. Yet, sleep hygiene is imperative to your baby’s health. What to do?
My favorite feature of the Newton Crib mattress is that it is fully washable. Better still, the wash process is not complex. Simply remove the cover and toss it in the machine for a quick wash. While that runs, hose the mattress down until it is clean then leave it out to air dry. The breathability of the mattress core makes it easy to dry but ensure that it properly dry before returning it to the crib.
The Newton crib mattress is not organic. For some parents, this might be a deal-breaker. Fair enough. I would, however, overlook its non-organic materials due to the hypoallergenic benefits it provides.
The polymer material used to make this mattress is far less likely to spark allergies compared to most organic materials. Furthermore, it is fully cleanable. This enables you to wash it regularly and prevent the accumulation of dust and other allergy-causing contaminants.
Greenguard Gold Certified
Ordinarily, when you unwrap a new mattress, you get hit by a specific smell. It is something most of us have come to associate with newness. Except, the truth behind that smell is that new mattresses emit Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs).
VOCs are toxic and are certainly something you should protect your baby from. They are known to cause allergies, respiratory illnesses, and even skin problems.
While unwrapping the Newton crib mattress, I did not encounter any ‘new mattress smell’. This is likely why these mattresses have earned themselves the Greenguard Gold Certification. It is only awarded to products that have been tested and found to have VOC emissions that are so low, that they pose no tangible health risk.
After hours of rocking and soothing your baby to sleep, putting them to bed is a moment of great victory. Unless of course, you have a spring mattress. Sometimes even the tiniest squeak could stir your baby and make putting your baby to sleep feel like walking on eggshells.
The Newton baby mattress has no springs, plugs, or any other noisy accessories. Once you lay your little one down, you can quietly moonwalk out of the room without any contraptions selling you out. I also appreciate this feature as it takes away worries such as a broken spring making the mattress uneven.
This baby mattress is designed for 2-stage use. One side is designed for infants while the second is for toddlers. As such, you can count on it to serve you until your baby is ready for a toddler bed.
The materials used to make the Newton baby mattress are also quite durable. The polymer core can easily survive being handed down to siblings to come without reducing any of the mattress’s safety benefits. I would only recommend getting a new mattress cover if you choose to use it for your baby’s future siblings.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a firm mattress to avoid SIDS and SUIDS. An overly soft mattress may allow your baby to ‘sink in’ which, in turn, makes it easy for them to suffocate. A firm mattress, on the other hand, remains flat even when your baby turns in their sleep; it poses a lesser risk of obstructing their airway.
A reasonably firm crib mattress is equally essential for spine support. Infants are born with weak spines that require support. If a crib mattress is not able to offer this, your baby may not sleep very comfortably.
The Newton crib mattress is firm but bouncy. When you put some weight on it, it compresses slightly but does not sink. In other words, your baby will be well supported and they will not feel like they are sleeping on a rock.
The polymer strands woven to make a Newton Wovenaire® crib mattress are fully recyclable. Consequently, the entire mattress is recyclable as it contains no springs, plugs, or additional materials that would hinder it from being recycled. If you are keen on fulfilling your environmental responsibility as an earthly citizen, you’re welcome.
If Not the Newton Crib Mattress Then What?
It could be that the Newton crib mattress does not check all your boxes. Or perhaps, you would like to simply see what else is out there before you invest in one. The following are some alternative crib mattresses worth considering.
Graco Premium Foam Crib and Toddler Mattress
The Graco Premium Foam Crib and Toddler Mattress is Greenguard certified. You can rest assured that it will not envelop your baby in VOCs. It is also moderately firm and provides great support and stability.
On the flip side, this mattress does not provide the 100% breathability of the Newton baby mattress. Other distinct features of the Graco Premium include:
- It is made of foam
- It is only available in a waterproof cover
- The mattress core is not fully washable
- The mattress is only available in a standard crib size
The Graco Premium Foam Crib and Toddler Mattress will cost you roughly $250 less than the Newton baby mattress.
Lullaby Earth Breathe Safe 2-Stage Breathable Crib Mattress
Lullaby Earth Breathe Safe is designed for use by infants and can be flipped over for toddlers. It is available for standard-size cribs and has a 3-D waterproof mattress cover. The mattress cover is breathable but the mattress core is not certified as having the same high level of breathability.
Regarding cleaning, only the cover can be fully cleaned.
This mattress is firm and offers a fair amount of comfort. It is also free of lead, phthalates, and fire retardants. It costs you about $40 less than the Newton baby mattress.
Naturepedic Organic Crib Mattress
The Naturepedic Organic Crib Mattress would be ideal if you would like an organic mattress. It is made of organic cotton. Even the waterproof feature on the mattress cover is achieved using organic sugarcane. It is a two-stage mattress for infants and toddlers.
It is important to note that this is a coil mattress and may occasionally get noisy. It is Greenguard certified but not much emphasis is given to breathability. Cotton is good at wicking off moisture but my jury is still out on matters of airflow. It is within the same price range as the Newton baby mattress. If this fits your bill, make haste and check it out.
Comparing Between The Products
To make comparisons easier, here’s a summarised breakdown of all the features of the products:
